Prentiss, enchanted by The Secret Garden as a child, often drew her own secret gardens. Mosses always intrigued her, sometimes providing soft beds to lie on when riding or hiking in the forest below her family's house in the Adirondacks. She is an organic gardener and was a master gardener mentoring at the Tom Settlemire Community Gardens in Brunswick, Maine, where she still maintains two plots for sun loving herbs and vegetables. As a gardener living on a wooded, moss-rich property, Prentiss was inspired to create Mainely Moss Gardens, incorporating her love of mosses with her background in art utilizing composition, color, and storytelling to create artistic compositions. She especially enjoys the challenge of unusual containers to create captivating arrangements.
David is an avid nature lover, photographer and hiker. His macro photography and panoramic images show his love for nature, his attention to detail, and his eye for striking compositions. His macro photography journey began about 25 years ago when first taking pictures of different mosses and lichen. He became fascinated by the tiny ecosystems contained within such small areas, which fueled his love for both macro photography and mosses.
As environmentalists, David and Prentiss encourage, where possible, the replacing of grass lawns with mosses, which are both highly resilient and beneficial for us and the planet. Mainely Moss Gardens can begin the process with you by incorporating pocket gardens into your landscape utilizing mosses, Japanese maples and other compatible plants.
